The blaze occurred in the area of Gleneida Avenue on October 22, 1974, causing damage and destruction to many local businesses: Morettini’s Variety Store was the largest, followed by Capiello’s Jewelers, Carmel Liquor Store, Kurtz Newspaper Store, Smalley’s Inn, Amber Waves of Grain and Montgomery Ward and Simpson’s Drug Store.
The fire was fought by more than 200 volunteer firefighters. At the same time, police from the Towns of Carmel, Kent, New York State Police and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office handled traffic, crowd control and overall security of the scene, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.
The site is now home to the Carmel Diner, located at 63 Gleneida Avenue.
